PBIS
stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports and is a research-based, school-wide systems approach to improve school climate and create safer and more effective schools. It is a positive and proactive process that focuses on improving a school’s ability to teach expectations and support positive behavior for all students.
Hawtree Creek middle school has implemented PBIS since its inception in September 2012. Along with our character values; perseverance, collaboration, community and leadership, we have created a positive school culture. In addition to teaching our students reading and writing, we believe teaching students how to behave sets them up for successful learning. Teaching students our behavioral expectations gives them the tools they need to have a clear understanding of the procedures that are in place to help create a predictable and safe learning environment for them.
Every year, through classroom guidance lessons, we define our behaviors and align them with our core character values. We not only teach, we review, reinforce, model and practice throughout the year. We then acknowledge and reward positive behavior individually and collectively.
Each day, a PBIS monitor carries around a rating sheet. Throughout their day, classes are graded by their teachers based on our behavioral expectations. At the end of every month the classes who receive the highest ratings are highlighted and rewarded with a prize. At HCMS, we believe positive behavior should be celebrated! PBIS at HCMS helps our students succeed socially, emotionally and academically.
